The US monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut this year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.
Decision Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve
The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”
Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.
Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the count of employment gains added to the market and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in August.
The figure of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.
Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown
Though BLS was scheduled to publish September’s employment data in early October, it halted its publication once the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.
Price Data Reveals Moderate Increase
Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
