A defence official has confirmed that the MoD is currently examining the potential security risks associated with Chinese-made cars, while personnel have been advised to refrain from talking about classified matters in any cars.
Security Advice for Defence Staff
During a recent interview on LBC, Luke Pollard commented on claims that Ministry of Defence staff have been told not to talk about secret material while travelling in Chinese vehicles.
He stated that the MoD is “looking into” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, however stressed that safety is a concern in all contemporary vehicles.
We have a collection of tens of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and those vehicles represent a very small number.
However regardless of if you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a car from another country, our instruction to our staff is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence devices into their vehicle, not to have discussions at a classified classification in any car, because of the growing threats of surveillance that exist in all vehicle, to restrict those confidential conversations in protected areas. This is a prudent and reasonable thing for anyone worried about security.
After it was put to him that it would be wise for the MoD to cease using all cars from China, Pollard replied: That is exactly what we are looking into at the moment.”
Broader Defence Background
The revelation comes as claims from Norway and Denmark have alerted the UK to the existence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese electric buses, which could allow China to disable public transport and bring disruption to transport systems.
Furthermore, a Russia intelligence vessel was reportedly directing laser beams at Royal Air Force aircrew, labeled a “highly dangerous” action by defence officials.
The broader defence situation underscores the significance of strong protocols and caution in all aspects of official activities, from vehicle use to communication practices.
