Tetris Didn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Might Solve This

Each time a major awards ceremony approaches, one notices a demand to include of new categories to recognize overlooked contributions and fill the hearts of fans with niche passions.

Another commentator made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize since similar to single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent above others. The demand is this: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason film award organizations avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, which are so diverse they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications actually cover many game types, and you can find room for most games within them.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, all very different: building puzzles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games published annually without proper recognition in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated for anything during that awards season
  • Another creative title was excluded during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored that year
  • Just some logic titles scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most popular titles in the world continuing this trend for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with famous sandbox experiences competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. One could readily select multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

Restating the point, these are games without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among the purest expressions of gaming itself. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait decades.
